Company Communications - Yammer beats Twitter
So, today I suggested that doof should start using Yammer for company messaging.
We all love twitter… well, I imagine most people who read my blog do. But, creating a new twitter account, making it private, then only adding your work buddies, can be quite annoying. But, imagine a service that was dedicated to company communication, but worked with all the magic and flow of Twitter.
Enter Yammer.
Where it really shines is in its difference to traditional company communications. Instant Messaging Clients are usually 1 to 1, which could leave a great deal of people ‘out of the loop’ and, it’s real time, which can disrupt people’s work flow. Email is getting… well, quite boring and a pain to keep up with.
Yammer offers the same functionality as Twitter, but with a few great additions. You can have groups, tags, as well as the usual replies, direct IMs, etc…
So, want to let the tech group know what you’re doing?
Easy just message:
@TECH loving the new java api
Or want to talk about a specific topic? just message:
#v2 is having a big idenentity crisis. Need to clarify the #design
I’m not going to bore you all with exactly how it works, but I’m just going to let you know that we’ve only been using it for one day, and already we can see that it’s going to save so much time on emails, IM, meetings, and all the other boring stuff us developers would rather do without.
My only concern, and, I wouldn’t mind this… But I think that twitter could very easily add this more corporate layer to their current offering and swallow Yammer. But as long as I can get a service like this somewhere, I’m not really bothered!
If you’re already using Yammer, let me know what you think?
If you’re not… try it, it really does rock.

Hello Elliot, sorry for posting this here (your contact form is not seeming to get parsed at the moment)
Was wondering if you would consider making the progress bar on your filepanda site available to the general public in the near future… I think it’s awesome and might have some use for it
And as for Yammer, I plan on trying it… Especially to facilitate communication between our two offices.. I’ll let you know how it goes!
